Dalgalanmalar
Geçmişte deve güreşlerinin Anadolu’da yaygınlaşmasının ko-
şullarını hazırlayan bazı gelişmeler kuşkusuz dünya ölçeğinde
yaşanan bazı olaylar ile bağlantılıdır. Bunun yanı sıra, deve gü-
reşlerinin inişli çıkışlı dönemlerden oluşan varoluş sürecinde de
yine küresel ölçekte yaşanan bazı gelişmelerin önemli etkilerini
belirlemek mümkündür. Yerel, geleneksel ve kültürel karakteri
bulunmakla birlikte, bu etkinlik aslında birçok kez küresel ölçek-

Deve güreşlerinin günümüzde merkezi alanını oluşturan Ay-
dın ve İzmir çevresi, öteden beri dünya ölçeğinde önemli ticaret
yollarının bir parçasını oluşturmuştur. Bölgeye ulaşan transit ker-
van taşımacılığı her ne kadar 17. yüzyıl sonlarında zayıflamışsa
da, bir süre sonra bölgenin ulaşım sistemini yakından etkileyecek

nin batı Anadolu’da yaygınlaşmaya başlaması ile aynı dönemde
batı Anadolu’da toplumsal ve ekonomik hayatı derinden etkile-
yen gelişmeler arasında bağlantılar bulunmaktadır. Deve güreş-
lerinin yaygınlaşmaya başladığı 1800’lü yılların ilk yarısı, aynı
zamanda uluslar arası ticaret anlaşmaları ile Osmanlı Devletinin
İngiltere ve Fransa tarafından açık pazar olarak dünya ticaret ağı-
na sokulduğu dönemdir. Bu anlaşmaların ilk etkisi, deniz ve kara
ulaştırmasındaki ve haberleşmedeki büyük teknolojik değişim-
lerle kendini göstermiştir (Kazgan, 2004:21). Osmanlı İmpara-

Some developments which paved the way for the conditions
for the flourishing of camel wrestles in Anatolia in the past are
undoubtedly in connection with some events experienced on the
global scale. Besides, it is also possible to determine the significant
impacts of some developments experienced on the global scale on
fluctuating periods. Even though this event has local, traditional,
and cultural characters, it was indeed deeply affected by some
developments and trends on the global scale many times.
Making up the central area of camel wrestles today, the vicinity
of Aydın and İzmir has constituted part of the globally important
trade routes for a long while. Even though the transit caravan
transport that reached the region weakened in the late 17th century,
new developments which would closely affect the transportation
system of the region took place after a while. There is no doubt that
there are connections between the commencement of the flourishing
of camel wrestles in Western Anatolia and the developments which
deeply affected the social and economic lives in Western Anatolia
in the same period. The first half of the 1800s, when camel wrestles
began to become widespread, was at the same time the period when
the Ottoman State was included in the world trade network as an
open market by England and France through international trade
agreements. The first impact of these agreements manifested itself
with the profound technological changes in sea and land transportation
